It’s NOT As Simple As Creating Your Own Product

I’m in no way trying to say that creating your own product has to be difficult. A lot of people give the advice that creating your own product is a strong and viable business model, and it IS. But what is most often glossed over is all of the steps involved in setting up your product for sale and marketing it.

Let’s say you create (or get created for you) an ebook. This is your product, your pride and joy. You either invested a certain amount of time or money to create the product. Now you need to make sure to plan the initial set up and ongoing marketing.

Initial Set Up

There are many ways to skin a cat, so these are just steps showing you ONE way to get things done:

  • get graphics done for your ebook
  • if necessary get additional graphics created for the sales page and/or squeeze page
  • create appropriate disclaimers and rights within the ebook
  • make sure your contact information is in the ebook
  • decide if you want to also sell additional rights such as resell rights
  • get reviews done of your product to gather testimonials for sales page
  • get a domain name and web hosting
  • decide if you want to create a squeeze page to capture customers’ data and then funnel them through the sales process via emails
  • if you create a squeeze page, now you have to create a short free report to give away, to promote your main product
  • create sales page for ebook
  • decide how to take payments (for eg., PayPal)
  • configure sales page to automate payments
  • configure sales page to automate product delivery
  • set up an autoresponder to capture customers’ data
  • set up any automated emails for your autoresponder
  • create a Thank you page and/or a OTO (one-time-offer) page

Marketing Ideas

  • pre-launch your product at the Warrior Special Offers forum at a special price
  • sign up to Clickbank and make sales through affiliates
  • create a related content site that pulls in traffic to your productwrite and post relevant articles pointing back to your sales page or squeeze page
  • create relevant videos and post to several video sites, pointing back to your sales page or squeeze page
  • create podcasts and post to several podcast sites, pointing back to your sales page or squeeze page
  • seek out joint ventures with others who are in the same field, or a complementary field

As you can see, there are several steps beyond just creating your own product. The great thing is, once you start implementing these steps, they get easier for each consecutive project you work on. Keep in mind that these steps are meant as a guideline. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and be creative. Also, nobody is holding a gun to your head saying that EVERY step must be completed and perfect in order to launch. No way! If you can’t, or choose not to, implement all steps in your plan right away, then that’s okay! You can always get your product launched and work on adding to the process as you go.

I wrote this in hopes that it helps lay out a starting blueprint for those who want to create their own product. Knowledge is power, and the more you are aware of that has to get done, the better prepared you will be.
